Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) remains an imperative in South Africa – Minister Davies

The Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr Rob Davies says black economic empowerment remains an imperative in South Africa. Minister Davies was speaking at the launch of the revised Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment Codes of Good Practice in Midrand, today.

"Black economic empowerment is not just a social and political imperative. We need to make sure that in the country’s economy, control, ownership and leadership are reflective of the demographics of the society in the same way the political space does. That’s why we are saying Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) remains an economic imperative. We cannot expect to grow and develop as a country if the leadership of the economy is still in the hands of only a small minority of the society," said Minister Davies.

He added that the talent pool that is available in the country will not be drawn in its totality if the majority of the country’s population was still excluded from the control of the economy.

"We will only be able to realise the number of benefits of the demographic and democratic changes when all our people have the opportunities which they ought to be having in terms of the values of our Constitution. So BEE is also an economic imperative," added Davies.

Minister Davies said the revised Codes sought to amend the secondary legislation arising from the Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment Act to make sure that people were truly and broadly empowered in South Africa, and genuine broad-based black economic empowerment took place. The amendment of the BEE Act and the revision of the Codes, said Minister Davies, would go a long way in plugging the gaps that businesses have taken advantage of such as fronting, "tick-box" compliance, and the exorbitant amounts of money that small enterprises have to pay to consultants to prove they were BEE compliant. Read the rest at Info.gov.za

The R600m road to Nkandla ("Zuma Avenue")

President Jacob Zuma's rural homestead of Nkandla has benefited from another development worth a whopping R582 million, thanks to taxpayers.

This time the sprawling village of KwaNxamalala has been given two new road networks which were unveiled by the provincial government yesterday.

The official launch, a stone's throw from Zuma's homestead, took place amid huge controversy over the reported R203m upgrade of Zuma's private residence in KwaNxamalala village.

It emerged last week that the Zuma homestead was being upgraded at a cost of between R203 m and R238m, with more than 90 percent of the tab being picked up by taxpayers. Read more on IOL

Anger at unanswered 10111 calls

According to an IOL article, a Belliville man has lodged complaints with National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega and Public Protector Thuli Madonsela after calls to the police 10111 emergency number were repeatedly unanswered and dropped after his car was stolen.

Steven Taylor, a presenter at UCT Radio, said he phoned the number as he watched his car being driven away from his Bellville home by thieves.

“I am calling for the person in charge of this call centre to be fired. This is clearly getting out of control now, with people possibly losing their lives as calls are not answered and complaints cannot go through.”

After his car was stolen, Taylor started a campaign on Twitter to call for sightings of the car to be reported. Read more on IOL

Oprah asked KONY 12 creator Jason Russell if he's gay and whether he was masturbating in public: Oprah Winfrey nabbed Invisible Children founder/KONY 12 creator Jason Russell for his first post-meltdown interview, which aired via Oprah's Next Chapter. As we already knew, he distanced himself from the pavement-slapping, publicly nude Jason Russell of that March day. He didn't shirk responsibility, exactly, but he did refer to it as an "out of body experience." He also said he remembered very little of it, so he couldn't say for sure if he was masturbating that day, but he didn't think so.[Gawker]

Why Obama's campaign is falling apart: A presidential reelection campaign needs three key elements: a defense of the incumbent’s record, a successful effort to define the opposition and a compelling vision of a second term.
President Obama may well celebrate a second term in Chicago next month, but the conventional wisdom underestimates the difficulty he faces, as his campaign has distinct problems with all three elements. His defense of his record is exceptionally weak, his effort to define Mitt Romney is nearly exhausted, and his vision for the next four years — perhaps the most important — has been largely missing from his effort this year.[NYDailyNews]
